Me and the Glockenspiel ...

Me and the Glockenspiel, originally uploaded by johntynan.

In my desire to start making music (we still haven’t unpacked our boxes) I picked up a new keyboard… of sorts… a glockenspiel.

I’ve had this sound in my head for months now, a pairing with the accordion. This bell-like tone and the deep reedy sound of the concertina.

One night, Rene and I went thrift store shopping, just to look around and have some fun. We were just leaving the store with a cute French navy outfit for Miles when, I spotted it… there. High upon on the wall. Above a row of suitcoats. A gleaming glockenspiel!

I normally wouldn’t do it, but Rene insisted I give in. And it’s been fun! I’ve been playing it for just over a week and I’ve really taken to it. I love the simple precision of how it’s played and the clarity of the notes.

Once we are able to open our baggage, I’m going to drag out the accordion and the audio recorder and put together some music that I hope will approach the sound that I’ve been meaning to create.

Walking Miles in his Stroller Makes his Dad Happy ...

Yesterday, when pushing Miles in his stroller into the grocery store, he looked up at me with such a wonderful smile that I almost cried with happiness. All I could do was smile back and talk lovingly to him as I shuffled dreamily through the aisles.

Rene and Miles and David Hockney ...

Rene and Miles and I checked out the National Portrait Gallery where we happened to linger over David Hockney’s Snails Space with Vari-Lites, “Painting as Performance”. We saw a lot of great portraits and art and crafts but the way the light dramatically altered this room over the course of five or ten minutes was amazing!

The Chinese New Year Parade ...

We stopped downtown prior to heading into the gallery to grab a bite to eat. Rene remembered a South American restaurant so we stepped in and got comfortable. Just as our lunch arrived, the Chinese New Year Parade began… right outside the window. We watched waves of people dressed up in costumes, people carrying banners and floating dragons. Most enjoyable ;)

Cold! ...

Cold!, originally uploaded by johntynan.

Miles is doing great and getting settled into a new routine.

After feeding at 8am and again at 10am, Miles made it clear that he only wanted to sleep in his harness (which is strapped to his dad’s chest). Soon after getting suited up for the cold, Miles and I went out walking to the store. We found a route to a pedestrian overpass and made it to a nearby mall. The sun was bright but still the wind was bitter cold and there were sizeable snow drifts. While Miles was safe the entire time, the experience made me think that walking is a subversive activity. Miles slept the entire time and even for awhile when we returned. He’s in his play area now and talking up a storm.

I’ve heard from Rene a couple of times today. Filling out lots of forms and meeting a lot of nice people. I’m sure we’ll hear more when she gets home for the day.
